Senior New Zealand artist Bill Hammond has shown with Brooke-Gifford since his first important exhibition in 1982. His atmospheric paintings are well known for their earlier pop-cultural and rock music references, and since visits to Japan and the seabird colonies of the subantarctic Auckland Islands in 1989, the hybrid birdmen who haunt mysterious Eden-like landscapes, inspired by the dramatic scenery of Banks Peninsula (where he lives in Lyttelton). We can never know whether the birds are turning into humans, or humans into birds. The immense popularity of his work has made Hammond one of the country’s most desirable investment artists, while his work continues to evolve and develop a rich New Zealand mythology all of its own. Hammond’s paintings are held in all significant New Zealand public collections and he has been the subject of the major Christchurch Art Gallery survey exhibition Jingle Jangle Morning which toured New Zealand in 2007.
