artists - Darryn George

Darryn George’s art takes the traditional minimalist kowhaiwhai (painted meeting house rafter) designs and koru/pitau forms and variations on the restricted red-black-white palette of his Ngāpui ancestors and reinterprets them through the lens of hard-edge modernist geometric abstraction. A particularly George signature feature is the areas of stucco-like texture contrasting with the glossy surfaces of his paintings. The slickly-executed paintings bring together George’s deeply felt Christian and spiritual values and his interest in the traditions of Māoritanga in what is a true and very natural blending of bicultural identity. His paintings are immediately recognisable and visually arresting in their clean simplicity and powerful optical effect. George has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Canterbury’s School of Fine Arts and a Masters of Fine Arts from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He is currently the Head of the Art Department at Christ’s College in Christchurch.
