artists - Seraphine Pick

Séraphine Pick rose to public attention in the early 1990s as part of a group of artists who graduated from the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in the late 1980s and working in Christchurch in the early 1990s and including Tony de Lautour and Peter Robinson. These artists are represented in most of the country’s public collections, and are among New Zealand’s most popular, have exhibited with Brooke-Gifford from the beginning of their careers. Pick’s delicately lyrical brand of surrealist painting is a delicate feminine realm of dream, memory and fantasy, which despite its great beauty is not afraid to trespass into the darker parts of human relationships and the psyche. Her work recalls that of the symbolists of the late nineteenth century and the surrealists of the early twentieth, and looking back even further into the Old Masters of history. In 2009, Pick was honoured by Christchurch Art Gallery with a large touring survey exhibition, Séraphine Pick.
